Yesterday a few of us gathered in front of the church, which is located in a residential neighborhood. A few parishioners had put up ghosts and cobwebs as some of our neighbors were doing. We're near a few blocks where putting up halloween decorations has gotten quite competitive.
One parishioner was a ghost named "Sophia." Another was from the matrix. I hate constructing costumes so I just got a sombrero, a lei, a broken umbrella, some shades and a cigar. I'm not sure what I was, but I was told that I was a priest on vacation.
We stood in front of the sanctuary and handed out some literature about our children's choir, babysitting cooperative, and Christmas pageant. We put "happy all saint's day" on the materials, as we don't really celebrate halloween. We distributed candy, although I had argued unsuccessfully for giving fruit.
Lots of kids came by. The ones dressed as little devils, of course, approached with great trepidation.
I think a lot of this would be more difficult to do if you really believed in vampires, witches and magic of that sort. I do, however, believe in the holy spirit. My heathen girlfriend, hwoever, said she didn't believe that the holy ghost was a girl.
