It's purpose is not to gather information, but to intimidate. Not to protect, but to humiliate. All it does is express the unfettered viciousness of one person to another, representing the ultimate corruption in power.

Elain Scarry alludes that physical pain renders speaking impossible. It would seem that torture inherently dissolves THE WORD itself, rendering truth and lies indistinguishable. Torture takes the innocent and makes him into a criminal.
