Green Knight beheads that analogy. Quebec separatists cross into Maine, kill three American soldiers and kidnap two others in a bid to negotiate a prisoner exchange, a demand rebuffed by the USA. Another five American soldiers are killed after the ambush. The USA responds with a naval blockade and by bombing hundreds of targets in Canada, including Ottawa's airport and the separatists' headquarters in Montreal.
There are parallels. When the US suffers some kind of attack, or it's just a slow news day, Canada is blamed for having porous borders and a "lax" immigration policy and there are calls for tighter borders. In a few years Canadians and Americans will need a passport to even cross for a day trip.
When I have asked exactly how Canada is more lax than the US (Canada runs criminal background checks just like the US does) and remind Americans that the 9/11 attackers were in the US legally on visas granted by the US government, no answer is forthcoming.
I would never expect the US to attack us the way Israel has attacked Lebanon, but scapegoating neighbours to avoid dealing with failed policies is not just restricted to the Middle East.
